When it comes to catching taxis in Malta it is simply a case of black or white. Literally, as there are two different types of cabs you can catch, one black and one white.
The white ones are the easiest to spot – they hang around in taxi stands and have the word ‘Taxi’ written on them. Drivers often approach you as you walk past them in the street offering their services.
There are about 250 individually owned white taxis in Malta. White taxis are generally more expensive than black ones. If you do take a white taxi, make sure you negotiate the price with the driver beforehand. An exception to that is when boarding a taxi at Malta International Airport. The taxis then have fixed rates to different localities in Malta.
Black taxis, on the other hand, need to be booked beforehand. These are generally the taxis that a hotel will provide. They don’t usually have any markings on them to show that they are taxis (except that the third letter on their number plate should be the letter Y). You can also board them from their dispatch office. Again, it is usually a good idea to negotiate a price with the driver beforehand. Most locals seem to use black taxis. Or Chauffeur Driven Cars as they officially known.
Riding around in taxis can be quite expensive in Malta if this is your primary mode of transport. Having said that, you can probably get from one side of the island to the other for around €23.
One other thing to note about Maltese taxis. Have you seen the film ‘Speed’? It seems like Maltese taxi drivers are under the impression that their car will explode if they travel at anything less than break-neck speed. They tend to go rather fast and drive somewhat haphazardly. But that’s all part of the fun.
Finally, if you’re in Valletta (which is quite hilly) you can climb aboard a CT Cab. This is an eco friendly electric cart that will take you anywhere in the city for a fee of €1 per person.
