The Maltese do love dressing up. Oh yes, the Italian grooming influence runs strongly on the island. On virtually any weekend evening you can find hordes of young Maltese descending on Paceville all groomed to perfection. The smell of aftershave and perfumes fill the air. Enough hair gel to paste down Don King’s afro shines on almost every man’s head, whilst extensions, dyes and funky styles run rife amongst the women.
It’s hard to say where one should go to get a decent hair cut or treatment. Sure, the big hairdressing names exist on the island. You can go there and you know exactly what you’re going to get. However, the sheer amount of salons in Malta cater for literally everyone. You can go get your scalp massaged if you like; you can have your hair styled by a man with several nose rings, two lip rings and purple hair if you prefer. Alternatively, you can go to the small local shop and get the basic haircut in a chair with church radio blaring out in the background.
Our researchers have visited a large number of these places including one local barber who has hundreds of posters of Manchester United on the walls, who doesn’t stop clipping his scissors even when he’s not cutting anything and who gives everyone the exact same hair cut (you describe exactly how you want it, but he’ll still give you the one-size-fits-all treatment!) At the other end of the spectrum there are salons where you can get your head massaged in a room that smells of fresh linen and flowers in full bloom while listening to whale music.
Like hairdressers everywhere, Maltese hairdressers love to talk. But don’t let that put you off. Just go, find somewhere that seems to fit the bill and see what happens. We are very sure you won’t be disappointed.
