Whether you live near the sea or far from its beckoning call, lazing the day away in a lido is always a compelling desire. As to be expected, in Malta it is standard practice.
Private and public beach lidos abound where one can spend a whole day by the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, feel protected from the raging sun by wholesome umbrellas and enjoy easy access to showering and changing facilities. Also available are catering and entertainment services which make it a complete and satisfying experience.
The first private beach lidos in Malta go back to the days of the Royal Navy in the Twenties when officers and their wives created their little seaside niches of comfort and fun, an idea that was soon taken up by Maltese entrepreneurs who fully exploited the Island's splendid coastline.
Today one finds a mixture of beach lidos, from the quiet, secluded ones offering basic requirements only, to the livelier complexes where fun parks and theme parks have also sprung up. The choice, of course, remains yours. There are several beach lidos in the Sliema/St Julian's area, but similar facilities can be found up north alongside some of the most beautiful bays to be found in the Maltese Islands, in Qawra, Mellieha and Bahar ic-Caghaq.
These private beach lidos offer refreshing outdoor pools, spacious, full-service sundecks, spectacular views, and direct access to the sea. No wonder many people find it hard to go home or back to their hotels at the end of the day.
