One thing you will surely find in Malta is a good cup of coffee. Just as the Maltese learnt from their Italian neighbours how to create the ultimate pizza, so too they have followed their neighbours and learnt how to deliver the perfect cup of coffee.
It was Italy’s old school coffee shops that paved the way for a world-wide phenomenon of coffee shops. And once again the influence of our Italian neighbours has left its mark as hundreds of coffee shops dotting the island pride in serving the perfect cup of coffee.
Most of the coffee shops in Malta and Gozo serve coffee using a state-of-the-art espresso and cappuccino coffee machine, ensuring that the right dose of coffee is used according to size and measure.
So if you want the small tot of strong coffee which you swallow in one gulp, ask for an espresso, but if you want to enjoy more than just a one gulp, ask for an espresso lungo or espresso Americano.
But the all-time favourite remains the Cappuccino. Cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed-milk foam. To render the taste even more pleasant, a few speckles of cocoa are sprinkled on the milky foam, and one may add sugar according to taste.
Hot Chocloates come in different flavours and sizes: from Caramel to Mint and Hazelnut to Vanilla. They also come in different thickness, with the thick Italian Cioccolata Densa being very popular on the Maltese Islands as well.
Many cafes serve the traditional pastizzi - hot pastries filled with either ricotta cheese or peas. The pastry itself is a delightful fair, formed of multiple sheets of transparently thin and crunchy layers. Also part of tradition is the hobza biz-zejt, the primary ingredients being bread, tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper. The other ingredients vary widely, although capers, olives and tuna flakes are almost universally included. Snacks usually include a large variety of bread rolls and pies.
And to spoil your self even further, you must try one of the cakes and sweet pastries which cafes pride in showing off in their display counter. The traditional Maltese kannoli, consisting of a pastry filled with mashed ricotta mixed with chocolate chips, cherries and almonds, constitute a real treat. And what about the Cassata Siciliana, Tiramisu, Black Forest, chocolate cakes as well as a variety of other sweet pastries and cakes. So before you head to café you have to be resolute on one thing only, if you’re on a diet, just postpone it for the day!
