Visit a Gay Bar

A stoic stronghold of Roman Catholicism like Malta might not seem like an ideal candidate for gay tourism so you may be surprised to learn that if you’re gay, you just might have the time of your life while in Malta. The local gay culture has been steadily on the rise so homosexuality is no longer the taboo that it used to be two decades ago.  Furthermore, the natural friendliness of the Maltese people will make you feel at ease at any establishment, or event that caters for tourists.  Although public displays of affection will generally be frowned upon, Malta is regarded as a very gay-friendly destination.

Although it’s nice to know that you can be yourself in any of Malta’s wine bars, restaurants, or nightclubs, you might be on the lookout for something a little more exclusive while on holiday.  If that’s the case, you’ll find that Malta isn’t short of entertainment and accommodation that’s aimed specifically towards gay men and women.

In Malta’s party central Paceville, you’ll always find at least one gay bar among the vibrant nightlife. Aimed at gay and gay-friendly people, such places guarantee a unique atmosphere featuring live singers, DJs, and drag artists for a night of multicoloured pleasure.  Other popular venues are Saints Bar in Ħamrun, a renowned haven among the transvestite crowd, and Tom Bar just outside the capital city Valletta which is strictly gay-only.  O Bar & Spa in St Julians is an innovative venue that admits only men.

Fantastic clubbing events and music festivals aimed at the gay culture are amongst the many activities held on the island.  Annual events held as part of DiversCity Week include the Pride March, film festivals, art exhibitions, and forum theatre.  Pink Sundays are held on a monthly basis by the Malta Gay Rights Movement aimed at the LGBT community while car Treasure Hunts, barbecues, horse riding, and diving activities are also part of the yearly planner.

Also, if you’re looking for some gay specific accommodation, Adams Hotel and Bar in St Julians is gay operated and admits only men.  In Valletta, the Adonis Hotel is gay-only whereas the Maison LaVallette, and the Valletta G-House are particularly gay-friendly.
