Eat Authentic Japanese

To be honest, sushi hasn’t taken off in Malta like it has in a number of other European cites. However (and yes we are aware that Japanese food is not just sushi) you can find some excellent restaurants in Malta offering a taste of Japan. Many of them seem to follow an East-Meets-West theme and most are quite upmarket.

Malta is still waiting for someone to open one of those high street sushi-on-a-conveyor-belt restaurants, but until then you can always get your sushi and sashimi freshly made (while you watch in some places). You can also sit around the Teppanyaki grill and watch your personal chef work his or her magic.

Japanese restaurants in Malta pride themselves on giving as authentic an experience of Japanese eating as possible. Whilst this might be a little hit and miss at times, the food is generally superb. If you’d rather stray a little from the authentic experience, you don’t need to use chopsticks if you don’t want to. But it’s always fun to try.

As already mentioned, most Japanese restaurants in Malta are rather upmarket. One even describes itself as “a point of encounter between Continental and Asian cuisine in a contemporary ambience, oozing RELAXED ELEGANCE”. Their capitalisation, not ours. Not sure why.

These are award winning restaurants, and therefore prices might be a little above average. The food is nearly always delicious though, and whilst it may not be the most inexpensive night out, you will definitely have a good meal. Just make sure you look relaxed. Oh, and elegant too.

One final word, in case you get tempted to practise some Japanese table talk. The proper Japanese drinking salutation is “Kampai”. Whatever you do, avoid using "chin chin" when drinking a toast, since in Japanese this expression refers to the male genitals. Don’t say you weren’t warned…
