Eat Good Gozitan

Thanks to evolution, every nation on earth has a selection of dishes that can rightly be considered as unique.

And Malta is no different with a wide variety of restaurants serving up a fascinating array of local delicacies that have been handed down over generations.

What you may not expect, however, is for Malta’s sister island of Gozo to also have its own culinary style. After all, Gozo is little more than a stone’s throw from Malta and the tastes that have influenced Maltese cooking have surely had an effect on the kitchens in the smaller country too?

Well, that may be. But we are talking about an island that is only minutes away by ferry yet still has its own dialect here. So why should their food be anything other than unique?

Gozitan cooking makes use of mostly locally grown produce from tomatoes to pumpkins and from olives to capers. Other key components are locally produced goat’s cheese and delicious sausages.

There are, as you would expect, a number of restaurants in Gozo which promote and prepare Gozitan food. However, as the uniqueness of the Gozitan product becomes more widely recognised, the smaller island is starting to export the concept to its bigger sister.

As we said before, it may seem strange for an island of Gozo’s size and proximity to Malta to have its own food but it does. And it’s very, very good.
