If there’s one thing you are sure to find in Malta, it’s a good pizza. No doubts in that direction.
The Maltese love their Italian cuisine (yes, pizza is Italian, not American) and they sure know how to cook it! Most Maltese restaurants calling themselves ‘pizzerias’ will serve a good pizza. So will the ones labelling themselves as a ‘trattoria Italiana’. (We should point out here that we are referring to the traditional thin crust pizza, not the deep pan oily stuff).
When it comes to eating a good pizza in Malta, you’re really spoilt for choice. You could make your decision based on restaurant location – do you want a candle-lit table by the sea or would you prefer music, a big group of friends and loud conversation? Do you prefer to eat al fresco by the promenade, or in a cosy old cantina in Valletta? Major decisions, you understand. Another thing to look out for is a wood-fired oven. For some reason the pizzas always seem to taste better than those cooked in a normal gas oven.
Pizza is so popular in Malta that even fast food hole-in-the-wall outlets make good pizzas. Malta is probably the only place in the world outside Italy where you can get a really good pizza at 3am!
If you can only eat gluten free pizzas, there is only one place in Malta that serves them -
La Cuccagna. This tiny restaurant is in Sliema and seems to specialise in pizzas. In fact, it serves no less than 22 different pizzas. This restaurant is especially cosy in winter (it can get quite stuffy in summer).
Essentially, pizza along with its distant cousin pasta, is very much part and parcel of the Maltese diet and huge amounts of restaurants serving them is evidence of this.
You would have to be very unlucky to order a pizza in Malta and not enjoy it. Very unlucky.
