Wherever you are on the planet, if you are looking for big portions of tasty food that might not be entirely good for you, then a plate of American’s finest is probably right up your street.
You know what we mean don’t you? Fried, meaty food served in large portions, preferably including the words “Lip smackin’” in the item description on the menu. If at all possible, your food should be served to you by a gum-chewing waitress named Marge.
Ok, so perhaps Malta may not have the diners that we all see in movies and your waitress is more likely to be called Maria than Marge, but you’ll still find plenty of places serving American style cuisine. These range from globally famous chain restaurants that offer similar décor, consistency and food, to more individual establishments serving deep pan pizzas and other food.
Items on the menu are all quite similar: burgers as big as your face, ribs the length of a piano keyboard and chicken wings so sticky you will have trouble getting them off your fingers. Whilst the authenticity of some of these joints might be questionable (I’m not sure how many American chefs have moved to Malta to make hot dogs) the food is nearly always good and served in good portions (the Maltese, like the Americans, enjoy their meals served in large portions).
Many of these American-style places are very busy in the evenings and provide loud music making them popular venues for stag and hen nights.
So grab a bud – beer or friend, you choose – and have fun in Sweet Home Alamalta!
