In the late 19 th century, when Queen Victoria was on the British throne, her Government decided to build four state-of-the-art gun batteries - complete with enormous 100-ton Armstrong guns. They would protect the harbours in the colonies of Malta and Gibraltar. One of them - Fort Rinella – was built close to Valletta and you can still visit it today.
There are scores of things to do and see on Malta but If you sat us down and pressed us for the top three day trips on Malta then we’d probably say – Valletta , Gozo and the island’s former capital city, Mdina . This beautiful and charming hill-top fortress is a must-see - and one of the best ways to get acquainted with it is to climb board the Sightseeing Train.
Tattoos are more fashionable now than they have been at any point in living memory. Driven by heavily inked sports, pop and film stars, it seems everyone is now following suit and having a design for life created on their skin. So why not take home a souvenir from Malta that you’ll have no problem getting through customs and can’t get smashed by baggage handlers? A tattoo!
By definition, everyone who lands in Malta from overseas is ‘a tourist’! But this ‘one size fits all’ description covers a whole range of people from the ‘never leave the hotel and sit by the pool all day’ package variety to those who want to fully immerse themselves in the culture and discover things that are uniquely Maltese – like the Marsaxlokk Fish Market.
Playmobil toys are magic! Not only are they exceptionally well designed and made but they also keep kids amused for hours. And they’re also magic because they have loads of very small parts, many of which see, to disappear! What most parents don’t realise, though, is those magical toys could well have been produced right here in Malta!
Since Roman and medieval times, Malta has played temporary home to many famous literary names in history, from Cicero, Coleridge and Lord Byron to Desmond Morris and Nicholas Monsarrat. And then there was the country’s homegrown famous literary son, Edward de Bono – he of lateral thinking fame. All sought help from the inspirational island.
Driving in Malta has changed massively over past couple of decades, as the amount and standard of vehicles on the island has increased. Also experiencing massive upsurges has been the average speed and frequency of traffic jams, while available parking has plummeted. But do not be afraid, or put off, because in spite of all this, driving here is still fairly tame and the most efficient way of getting around.
Some countries have fiestas, many have festivals and still more have carnivals - but Malta has festas! They’re similar to all of the above in some respects and yet utterly different and uniquely Maltese in others. The only way you’ll ever really find out is by attending one yourself.
On a site devoted to a very small island in the beautiful Mediterranean it’s no massive shock that activities involving the sea feature fairly prominently. Boats, in particular, are regularly mentioned and it would be a crying shame if you were to visit and leave Malta without having at least one nautical experience.
