Popeye Village

When you mention Popeye most people will only recall the cartoons that kept them entertained on Saturday mornings. Few will remember that there was once a film made about the super-strengthened sailor. Starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duval, it was a musical that, to put it politely, bombed at the box office.

Compared to today’s hi-tech blockbusters, the effects were poor back in the 80s but that didn’t detract from what was an entertaining, if financially unsuccessful, movie. The plot was nice and simple. Popeye went to Sweethaven, fell in love with Olive, adopted Sweetpea and had Bluto as his arch enemy.

The set for the film was built in Malta at Anchor Bay over a seven-month period in 1979. A massive eight tons of nails and 2,000 gallons of paint were used as the makers tried to create a real life version of Sweethaven amongst the rocks and hills.  And there it stands to this day.

Although some of the houses are just facades used to bulk up the set, there is still something magical about the place which is hard to put your finger on. Maybe it’s the fact that this is one piece of 20th century movie history you can actually get up close and personal too. Who knows? But it’s certainly worth a visit while you are in Malta.

Additionally, Popeye’s Village also offers various attractions – one of the most popular of which is the Children’s World Fun Park. Its rides and games are the perfect way to keep the kids entertained while the parents take in the stunning scenery of Anchor Bay and beyond.

Animation shows featuring Popeye and Olive Oil are also held daily at regular times. Other things you can do at Popeye Village is watch traditional glass-blowing, a Silver Smith at work, visit the winery, visit Santa’s Toy Town (in Christmas time), play pool, go on a boat trip or swim in the pools, including the wonderful splash pool.

The restaurant offers a large selection of food and is equipped with a large playing area that will keep your children entertained while you enjoy your meal, a drink or a coffee.
