Malta is not exactly famed for its rolling greenery and spectacular gardens. However that doesn’t mean that there are no beautiful gardens for you to visit if you are suddenly inspired to do so. In fact, San Anton Gardens in Attard are regarded as a fine gem among Malta’s many treasures and have delighted locals and tourists alike over several generations. A part of San Anton Palace, the official residence of the President of Malta, the San Anton Gardens have been open to the public since 1882.
Walking along the cobbled walkways in the shade of ancient trees, you will meet the occasional wandering cat, families of ducks and swans swimming in ornamental ponds, and discover the beautiful sculptures and aviary. A large variety of trees and flowers from around the world will transport you back in time to the 17th Century when the Grand Masters first adopted San Anton Palace for their summer retreat. In fact, some of the trees are over three centuries old with the oldest part of the grounds, the Eagle Pond at the opposite end of the palace, dating back to 1623.
San Anton Gardens hosts a number of significant events such as the Malta Horticultural Show, open-air theatre, as well as dance and musical performances. The English monarch Elizabeth II stayed at the palace during her most recent stay in 2005, and if they are good enough for the queen, I’m sure you’ll find the San Anton Gardens more than adequate for a lovely mid-morning stroll. As you wander through its peaceful paths and discover all its delightful corners, you’ll wish that you could stay there forever.
