Sailors, skippers, crews and boat owners from every port in the world have come to know of the Middle Sea Race, a highly rated offshore classic that starts from Malta and finishes in Malta.
Many a famous name has, at one time or another, taken part in this "must do" race. They include Ted Turner, who once described it as "the most beautiful race course in the world", Herbert von Karajan, Sir Chay Blyth and, then fresh from his round-the-world adventure, Sir Francis Chichester.
High-profile boats from the world's top designers take part in the Middle Sea Race which was co-founded by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Royal Ocean Racing Club way back in 1968. You too can take part in one of the various categories of boats in the race.
The race is a true challenge to skippers and crews who have to be at their very best to cope with the often changeable and demanding conditions. Equally, the race is blessed with unsurpassed scenery with its course taking competitors close to a number of Mediterranean islands. All boats participating in the Middle Sea Race are entitled to free berthing during and after the race.
Announcing your intention to take part is easy. There is an online entry form that allows you to electronically send your boat's details to the race organising authority. Registration is by not later than October 13, 2009. Godspeed!
This year the
Rolex Middle Sea Race will kick off on 16 October from the Valletta Grand Harbour in
the waters opposite the Saluting Battery in Valletta and Fort St'Angelo
in Birgu as thousands of people gather on either side of this imposing
harbour to enjoy this spectacle of sail.
The final prize giving
is on 23 October.
