There are times when just one bar won’t do and a good old fashioned pub crawl is in order. You may be pleased to know that Malta is jam-packed with a wide variety of different pubs that will suit all tastes – whether you wish to be surrounded by a hearty atmosphere, or a sleek and stylish décor.
A great place to start a pub crawl is in the capital city Valletta. The picturesque Valletta Waterfront contains a multitude of different bars where you can stop for a pint. Once you’ve cleared the waterfront it will be time to venture into the inner city. There you’ll find several traditional bars with their trademark billiards table and stale beer smell as well as more modern locales such as the artistic Café Jubilee and 2.22 where you’re bound to meet a fine example of Malta’s trendy demographic.
Of course, no self-respecting pub crawl in Valletta will fail to include Ollie’s Last Pub in the heart of the city. Formerly just known as The Pub, this is the very place where the actor and notorious drinker Oliver Reed passed away and is a Mecca among pub crawlers the world over.
In Malta’s party hotspot Paceville, you will find a number of music bars that are aimed at younger people. These venues frequently change their names and themes to cater for current trends although you can always be assured of a good selection of bars to discover. At the same time, some places such as Ryan’s Irish Pub and Footloose Fun Bar have been there for quite awhile and will provide you with a point of reference the next time you return.
Other ideal places for pub crawls are the Sliema Front, the Three Cities, and Bugibba to the North of the island. However, if a proper Maltese drinking experience is what you seek, then you need to conduct your pub crawl in one of the local villages. Each village is bound to have a bar dedicated to each of Malta’s two main political parties as well as another bar for each of the village’s highly competitive band clubs. Many of them would also serve small snacks like chicken wings, bread, or snails free of charge while you drink. However, if you’re going during a sensitive time such as an election or the village feast, just make sure that you’re wearing the right colours…
