Learn an Instrument

The teaching of music is a daily activity in Malta, what with the many village and town band clubs competing for new talent and the various private schools of music which provide regular classes for children, adult beginners and musicians seeking to specialise in one musical instrument or the other.

The piano is the favourite of many aspiring musicians, but other instruments, like the guitar, the violin, the cello and several brass instruments are also actively sought. While band-club students usually concentrate on brass instruments ideal for the festa marches as well as the special concerts that are held at certain periods of the year, students who attend the Johann Strauss School of Music in Valletta go deeper into music study and have a wider choice of instruments. Some of Malta's best musicians started from there and are today established performers with top orchestras in Malta and overseas.

The opportunity to learn to play a music instrument is open to all, including visitors spending a longish period on the island. Music activity in Malta is further enhanced by the many choirs that one can join, the band clubs and the small orchestras. Gozo too has its thriving School of Music. The National Orchestra, based at the Manoel Theatre, contains the cream of Malta's musicians who regularly play in front of visiting dignitaries from all over the world. Visitors who are interested in learning a musical instrument can hook up with one of the many private tutors who are available all round the island.

Whatever your long-term intentions, Malta is as good a place as any to start. Whether you want to really get into the wolrd of music in a deep way or just learn a few tunes to wow people at parties, Malta has it all. Obviously there are no guarantees you will be the new Robbie Williams or Beyonce. But you never know.
