Learning to drive during your holiday may not be on the to-do list of most people but why not go ahead and give it a try? Imagine your family and friends’ look of surprise when you return from your trip with a sudden mastery of the roads. At the same time, during your driving lessons you would also be sampling a unique taste of Malta and the Maltese.
The old saying goes that in Malta everyone drives in the shade. This is not strictly true – unless the shade happens to be on the left side of the road. As with England, Australia, and New Zealand, in Malta people drive on the left with drivers usually sitting on the right side of the car. However the saying does hint that the Maltese have a certain haphazard approach when it comes to driving. This is also not strictly true. Since Malta is very densely populated there are a great many cars on the road and this will perforce result in some chaotic traffic conditions. However, that being said, it is nowhere near as tricky as driving in most of the world’s major cities.
When learning to drive in Malta, a driving instructor will pick you up and take you to an open area where you will learn the rudiments of driving. Once you master the basics, your instructor will take you out into the open roads where you can be free to hone your newfound skills. Although in the passenger’s seat, the instructor will also have access to the car’s pedals so that he or she can intervene if things happen to go awry – ensuring that catastrophes are avoided by all but the most determined of students. Occasionally, your instructor will take you back to the open area to practice new skills such as reversing the car and the much-dreaded parallel parking.
Normal rates for driving instructors in Malta are significantly lower than those of other instructors in other countries such as England. A wise visitor would learn to drive in Malta before returning home to casually and confidently sit for their driving exam.
