Learn to Sail

While to some sailing is a great hobby to others it is a serious sport. Whether you want to learn sailing for fun or whether you wish to take this sport to another level, it should be comforting to know that it is very easy to learn how to sail – probably much easier than you think.

With a moderate climate all year round, the beautiful Mediterranean Sea around Malta serves as the ideal location to learn how to sail. The Mediterranean is an enclosed sea, so tides are very limited and there are no risks of hurricanes.

So it is no wonder that the Middle Sea Race, a highly rated offshore classic that starts from Malta and finishes in Malta, attracts sailors, skippers, crews and boat owners from every port in the world.

Many sailing enthusiasts say that sailing can be almost like flying. As your boat sails along with the wind, the sound of the water and the breeze on your face will give you a sensation of freedom. Your boat can almost be described as coming to life as it bobs along, acting in harmony to the wind and sea.

Regardless of the differences in type and size, all sailboats work the same way, harnessing the wind for propulsion.  Once you learn the basics, and get the gist of how to set sail, you will be able to move from small boats to larger ones.

Malta is resident to some of the best sailing schools in the world. These sailing schools offer courses and certification under the patronage of foreign accreditation schools.

The Maltese sailing academies are aware that no matter how favourable the Mediterranean waters can be, you can never be too safe at sea. This is why they adopt very strict regulations, and take every possible precaution to ensure that new sailing cadets receive all the necessary training before obtaining their qualifications.

There is so much more to sailing than just steering a boat. Sailors are not only responsible for the safety of the boats and their crew, but especially for swimmers and divers. It is important to know the international regulations concerning what equipment is required by law.

The more you learn about sailing, the more fun and the safer the sport will be. Sign up for sailing classes and by all means read. It is important to remember that you can learn all the rules and definitions in the comfort of your home the only way to actually learn how to sail is by getting out and doing it.

Only after completing a sailing course and becoming an accredited sailor will you be able to truly exploit the most wonderful treasure of the Maltese islands – the surrounding Mediterranean Sea.
