Most golfers agree their commitment to the sport is obsessive. Their long-suffering wives (and husbands) have good reason to agree. It is the beauty of golf that one can be a mere beginner and still enjoy practising on the sitting-room carpet.
The more experienced golfer does very much the same thing. However, they both can't wait to be out on the course - every day if possible. One of the oldest golf clubs in Europe (outside the UK), the Royal Malta Golf Club was founded by British servicemen way back in 1888. In 1904 it moved to the present course, described by many as "a gem created out of a relatively small parcel of land" at the Marsa sports grounds where it has its clubhouse.
Joining the RMGC is not a straightforward thing. Under a long-standing arrangement, which goes back to the early 1900s, those wishing to join the club are required to be members of the Marsa Sports and Country Club (MSCC). This is rightly perceived as an added value by members as they are able to make use of the dozen or so sporting and other facilities that the MSCC offers, including a swimming pool, bars and restaurants.
Visitors are always welcome to play at the RMGC, Thursday and Saturday mornings being the only exceptions. Visiting golfers can actually request tee time online by just filling in a request form found on the RMGC website The Royal Malta Golf Club offers eighteen holes of golf on a very well maintained course.
Malta's temperate climate and the island's proximity to central Europe make it an ideal venue for off-season golfing breaks. Explanation: playing golf when you are supposed not to be playing golf. Try and stop any of them.
