Stay Self-Catering

This can be quite a nice thing to do, especially if you are a large family visiting Malta or if you’re going to be in Malta for an extended amount of time. It is a great way to save on money as eating out every day can end up being a major expense. It also gives you a certain amount of freedom and flexibility that you might not get in a normal hotel.

We always feel that staying in a self-catering apartment is the closest you can get to actually living like a local. You get to shop at the same supermarkets or visit the same fruit and vegetable stores as they do. There’s something about that which is appealing – you can learn more about the people whose country you are visiting by just being with them instead of being inside a hotel restaurant with Enya playing in the background.

A simple internet search will reveal a multitude of websites offering anything from seaside apartments to country villas in Malta, all self-catering.

Many of these apartments or villas on offer are nicely done up (although some can be quite kitsch – ask for photos if this might bother you) and have large rooms. Many also have a swimming pool or at least a garden or balcony. If a rustic farmhouse is your thing, then you’ll definitely have no problem finding accommodation. The same goes for modern apartments overlooking the sea. There really is an abundance of self-catering options available on the island. Many of these are privately owned which could actually offer an even more personalised service than when dealing with a company or hotel (see the ‘Rent a Property’ article).

However, if you’d prefer the option of being in a hotel whilst having a self-catering apartment, then there’s plenty to choose from too. Most central localities have at least one hotel offering self-catering apartments. Many 4 and 5 star hotels also provide apartments that offer full self-catering facilities.

Your best bet is to spend some time on the internet and have a browse through some of the many apartments on offer. It really shouldn’t be too difficult. Most sites include pictures of the rooms and a list of amenities.
