This definitely isn’t a problem. You see, on you arrival on the island you’d be forgiven for thinking that the only buildings in Malta are hotels. There are just so many of them, from the 5 star deluxe ones to the tiny, homely ones. If your mind conjures up images of Basil Fawlty at the mere mention of the word guesthouse, never fear, the list of guesthouses in Malta is huge – many of them are very good and that should help you dispel that myth.
As in most places, guesthouses in Malta tend to be family run. If you do your research properly, you can end up lodging at some gems, such as a converted 350 year old monastery in Valletta which is run by an elderly lady named Annie.
Some of the décor you’ll find could be a little kitsch and might remind you of grandma’s house, but this could only help to make the place all the more homely. Rooms are generally simple but very clean.
Some gueshouses offer use of a garden – a nice place to hang out on warm summer evenings and a few also include buffet breakfast in the price of the room. Most will offer to pick you up from a central location if the guesthouse is a little difficult to find. Many will offer coffee/tea facilities in the rooms and perhaps a communal kitchen that can be used by all guests. Don’t automatically assume that all rooms are en suite, we know of one place where all rooms have a shower and sink but toilets are in the corridor (not literally of course!)
The sheer amount of guesthouses in Malta should make your choice pretty easy. Just do a little research and I’m sure you’ll find something that’s perfect for you.
