To be honest there aren’t many hostels in Malta. The thing is, because there are so many hotels, competition is extremely stiff and so prices come down and people who normally stay in hostels can usually afford to stay at a budget hotel.
Another reason for Malta’s lack of hostels is that it isn’t really on the backpacker route. Not being part of mainland Europe, it can be a little difficult (read expensive) for an average backpacker to get to. It is a pity because there are so many things a backpacker would love – the history, the beaches and water sports, the cheap beer…
So hostels aren’t plentiful. Having said that, there are a couple of hostels on the island. They are actually a little different to your average hostel in other parts of the world in that they tend to resemble self-catering apartments or B&Bs, rather than hostels. They normally, however, offer quite a lot of facilities not normally found in hostels including a tea/coffee maker, hairdryer, safety deposit box, fridge and even satellite TV…all in-room!
The key is to ask around and do some proper research, but I’m warning you – the list will be short! It’s got to be though, with some guesthouses and hotels offering accommodation for as little as 7 Euros a night.
