Windsurfing

At times, Malta is a windsurfer's dream. The small size of the island means that when you can't find ideal winds at one place, you can hop back in the car and be on the other side of the island in minutes.

In Malta there are no prevailing trade winds which guarantee wind at specific times of year, but the two main wind conditions are: from November to March cold fronts which usually travel across the Mediterranean from NW to SE giving mainly strong NW winds lasting two to three days.

These winds average around force five to six, but force seven to eight gales are not uncommon. Weather is usually clear and cool and the average daytime temperature is 15 degrees Centigrade. In Spring there are low pressures over North Africa between Tunisia and Libya which result in easterlies that blow for about two days. On average these winds are from force five to six. The windsurfing rental business caters for all levels of windsurfers from beginner to advance, so there is no need to bring your own equipment if you don’t want to.

Winter wetsuits of at least 4mm are required between November and April. Shorts can be used in the warmer months, and a tee shirt/shorts will be fine from June to September. The Mediterranean, especially the crystal-clear waters around Malta, can be quite seductive. If you've never windsurfed before, you can always go to one of the various windsurfing courses that are offered at Beginner and Intermediate levels. Beginner Courses are targeted at those new to the sport. Beginners' boards are used and, under constant supervision, participants learn the first steps to becoming a windsurfer.

Only those who have either completed the Beginner Course or have already picked up a basic knowledge of windsurfing can take the Intermediate Course which aims at providing students with all the necessary skills to become independent windsurfers in moderate conditions. So pick up a board and let the ideal conditions blow you away!
