Maltese wine producers today cope quite comfortably with the imported competition. While there was a time when pundits somewhat cynically asked where were all the vineyards that produced so many different Maltese brands, today it is acknowledged that the Maltese wine industry has developed, physically and scientifically, in such a way as to make it not only viable economically, but also a worthy competitor on any selected table.
The best of Maltese wines have been winning international awards for years, but the present-day creative drive has resulted in a most welcome and refreshing choice of top-quality wines. As proof of the proverbial pudding is in the eating, Maltese wines have happily stood their ground well at restaurants and wine bars everywhere in Malta and Gozo.
There is also a growing export trade in the field, particularly in EU markets. For a further bite of the pudding, however, you can also go wine-tasting at one of the various wine estates to be found on the island. Wine-tasting activities are organised on a regular basis. They are informal events at which you are offered, to an accompaniment of the relevant cheese choices, Maltese reds and whites, both types of which are a joy to discover.
Most visitors end up going back home with a reasonable bottle load of their favourite brands. Some of the estates also provide guided tours of the actual vinyards where one can meet the experts and the producers themselves who explain the intricacies of wine-producing in a sun-drenched place like Malta.
