Music festivals are big business these days. Across Europe, massive events now take place throughout the summer, featuring the biggest names in the modern dance, pop and rock world. Tickets costing well in excess of €100 - double that figure in some cases! Malta has a massive music festival too but with one massively significant difference – this one is free!
The event is called Isle of MTV and it’s the largest free open-air concert in Europe. It takes place at the end of June on the area called the Granaries in Floriana, which is right next to Valletta.
Given that people are well accustomed to forking out three figure sums to attend such events, you can guess that this is massively popular. Crowds of around 50,000 people regularly turn up to see the talent and there would be more if space allowed. Isle of MTV is massively popular and has been since it was first staged on the island in 2007.
Many superstars of the music industry have performed here in past including the one-and-only Lady Gaga (right before she became super-famous), as well as the Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta, Kelis, Scissor Sisters, Maroon 5, Enrique Iglesias, Garbage, Morcheeba, One Republic, Gorillaz and N.E.R.D.
Another big name turned up to headline the 2011 event when Snoop Dogg took to the stage and wowed the crowds. While the headline acts in 2012 included Flo Rida, will.I.am and Nelly Furtado.
Isle of MTV is organised by the giant global TV operation, in partnership with the Malta Tourism Authority. If you watch MTV anywhere in Europe then the chances are that you might have seen it already because performances are recorded and edited into a 60-minute highlights programme and shown across all 20 MTV channels on the continent.
As it’s free you can’t book tickets for the event. Admission is operated strictly on a first-come, first-served basis and numbers are restricted. So, if you’re thinking of making your way to see it, we advise you arrive very early, especially if you want to be close to the front where you’ll get the best view of the action!
The Isle of MTV festival is preceded by Malta Music Week with numerous gigs and parties held all over Malta. For visitors to the Maltese Islands, this is a chance to spend the day sunning yourself and relaxing at the beach before partying with your friends through the night.
Dance fans should also look out for the annual Creamfields event on Malta that happens later in the summer towards the end of August. Underworld have headlined in the past and you’ll see the best there is in genres such as trance, house, progressive, tech-house and techno. It tends to be a truly international line-up with Deadmau5, Cascada, and Carl Craig among those to also take to the stage in the past.
